The Mental Health and Physical Conditions in the Elderly Population is a two-day course designed to provide the law enforcement officer, APS Specialist/Investigator, mental health specialists, and other professionals who work with the elderly population with advanced knowledge related to the mental health and physical conditions seen in the elderly and persons with disabilities.
The training is based on the philosophy that personnel with a strong foundation and understanding of the forensic markers of abuse and neglect in the elderly and people with disabilities, along with knowledge of forensic investigative techniques, will have the tools necessary to develop a successful legal case in criminal and/or civil courts.

| 1. Aging Overview—This section covers Conditions related to the normal aging process, as well as conditions involving a rapid decline in mental health or a physical condition that requires immediate medical intervention. 2. DSM-5 – A discussion of the changes to the DSM-IV-TR to DSM-5 and what this means to the investigator. 3. Mental Health Conditions – Mental health and mental illness are defined, as is the impact of mental health conditions have on all areas of life, including mental, cognitive, and physical. The importance of interventions to stabilize and often reverse conditions that contribute to mental health decline is covered. 4. Physical Conditions—This section provides an overview of physical conditions, including some that masquerade as mental health conditions, and explains how to differentiate them and provide proper interventions. 5. Untreated Conditions – A discussion of untreated conditions in context with the rapid decline of an elderly person and the indicators an investigator would expect to see. 6. Medications—This section will discuss Information related to commonly used medications, recognizing dangerous polypharmacy issues, drug interactions, over-the-counter (OTC) and herbal medicines, quick reference guides, and apps available to help the investigator. 7. Resources – A group exercise to develop a guide to local, state, and national resources for professionals investigating and protecting the elderly. 8. Service Planning (using the multidisciplinary team) – A small group exercise to develop a service plan using case studies with complex case facts and resources from the local, state, and national levels.
