This training is a highly-rated investigations program that has consistently provided up-to-date training for professionals involved in elder abuse and elder death cases. The Shaken Baby Alliance has partnered with leading experts in elder abuse and agencies throughout the United States to produce Best Practice training to meet the needs of over 18,400 multidisciplinary professionals.
The Mental Health and Physical Conditions in the Elderly Population is a two-day course designed to provide the law enforcement officer, APS Specialist/Investigator, mental health specialists, and other professionals who work with the elderly population with advanced knowledge related to the mental health and physical conditions seen in the elderly and persons with disabilities.
This training is based on the philosophy that investigative and legal professionals with a solid foundational understanding of the medical aspects of child abuse and neglect and forensic investigative techniques will be provided with the tools necessary to investigate, prosecute, and ultimately protect children.

Aging Overview – Conditions related to the normal aging process vs. conditions involving a rapid decline in mental health or the physical condition that requires immediate medical intervention. 2. Highlights of Changes from DSM-IV-TR to DSM-5 – Changes to the DSM-5 became effective May 18, 2013, marking one of the most significant changes to the manual in over 20 years. 3. Mental Health Conditions – Mental health and mental illness are defined, and the impact of mental health conditions on all areas of life, including mental, cognitive, and physical—the importance of interventions to stabilize and often reverse conditions that contribute to mental health decline. 4. Physical Conditions – An overview of physical conditions, including some that are sometimes masked as mental health conditions, and how to differentiate and provide proper interventions. 5. Untreated Conditions – A discussion of untreated conditions in context with the rapid decline of an elderly person and the indicators an investigator would expect to see. 6. Medications – Information related to medications commonly used, recognizing dangerous polypharmacy issues, drug interactions, over-the-counter and herbal medicines, quick reference guides, and apps available to help the investigator will be discussed. 7. Resources – A group exercise to develop a guide to local, state, and national resources for professionals investigating and protecting the elderly. 8. Service Planning (using the multidisciplinary team) – A small group exercise to develop a service plan using case studies with complex case facts and resources from the local, state, and national levels.
